Challenges to Human Rights in Iran: Gender-Based Violence and Freedom of Expression

UNHRC

The Human Rights Council works to promote human rights around the world by addressing human rights violations through discussions and resolutions and through reports and recommendations on country specific situations. It's through these discussions of violations and through raising awareness that the Human Rights Council works to create and uphold a global moral standard that all states and people can aspire to. Although many of the foundational documents upon which the HRC rests are legally binding, the majority of the resolutions passed by the committee today are not. However, resolutions can still be passed that are not legally binding and merely add to the existing precedent on international human rights standards. Additionally, in conjunction with the General Assembly and the Security Council, the HRC also has the power to launch investigations and fact-finding missions into specific human rights violations either thematically or by country.

ABRAHAM OPPENHEIMER

DEPUTY CHAIR | KCLUNA

Hi everyone! My name is AJ. I am originally from San Francisco but have lived in London for the past two years. I am going into my third year at King’s College London and am pursuing a BA in Social Sciences. I have only been doing MUN for one year but throughout that year I have gotten increasingly involved in the UK MUN circuit. In my free time, I enjoy having dinner parties with my friends, traveling around the world, engaging with local and global politics, and exploring new places in London. I look forward to chairing the OHCHR at BathMUN!

JEWEL
WANG CHEN

HEAD CHAIR | QMUN

Hi everyone! My name is Jewel, and I am a third-year Law student at Queen Mary, University of London. I am from Taiwan, and I moved to the UK two years ago for university. I have been doing Model UN since freshman year of high school, and ever since, I have fallen in love with the dynamic of MUN: the professional role-play; intense debate; and collaboration with like-minded individuals who share my passion to redefine the global scene of diplomacy. At BathMUN, I hope you will find this experience invaluable, further shaping your pathway as a global citizen.

NONGRAT AETHER LI

DEPUTY CHAIR | SOASMUN

Aether Li (they/them) is a second-year student of Politics and IR at SOAS. This is unsurprising, considering their extensive years of being a debate kid, once even representing Thailand – their home country – as a member of the national team. Aether’s hairstyle also seems to change with global political trends (it’s deep red right now). Despite their anxieties with current global affairs, Aether believes MUN reflects the youth’s potential to impact and reshape it for the better. Outside MUN, Aether is either getting their third iced latte of the day at Pret, or café-hopping in the world’s most iconic districts.
