BUMUN 2023

19/03/2023, One Day Conference

BUMUN 2023

BUMUN 2023 was held on March 19th 2023 as our first post-COVID conference experience.  The committee running the society at the time formed a secretariat that ultimately brought 4 universities out to Somerset and kickstarted the renaissance of BATHMUN in the 2020s.

Delegates debated on two committees, a UNHRC and Diadochi Wars Crisis led by Bath and KCL members, before heading to the Slug and Lettuce for a Sunday evening social.

THE SECRETARIAT

NADINE GUERFI

SECRETARY GENERAL

I am Nadine, a second year Politics with Economics student. I have been the social secretary for last year and I am really looking forward to being the secretary general for 2022-2023.

From serious moderated debates, to decadent crisis sessions followed by memorable socials, being in MUN has truly been the highlight of my first year. As a politics student it allowed me to extend my knowledge of global affairs and apply concepts I learn in my course to real world events. BUMUN is the perfect place to grow both personally and professionally, and make life-long friendships and memories. I look forward to meeting all of our new members, chairing sessions that would be enjoyable to all, working with the amazing new committee, and going to MUN conferences.

AHMAD MAHMOOD ALKUCHIKMULLA

DEPUTY SECRETARY GENERAL

Hi, I’m Ahmad. I’m a 1st year undergraduate, studying BSc Politics with Economics. I am the MUN society’s liaison officer this year.

In this role I am responsible for being the direct liaison officer between the society and Students. I will be in charge of the relations of the society, will help the team to plan events, and prepare delegations for conferences. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns regarding events and conferences.

Politics and International relations have been an interest of mine for a very long time, I am particularly interested in the Kurdish issue, climate change, British politics, and economic policies.

RAGHAV VIVEK ANAND

UNDER-SECRETARY GENERAL OF ACADEMICS AND DELEGATE AFFAIRS

My name is Raghav and I am excited to be a part of the BUMUN committee for the year 2022/23. I'm about to start my second year as a Politics and International Relations student, so MUN is a dear passion of mine.

I've been doing MUN for around 8 years and have come to love the diplomatic maneuvering and collaboration that it simulates, akin to real-world politics. I'm particularly looking forward to helping our delegates prepare for upcoming conferences over the course of the year. Outside of MUN, I'm a voracious reader and a passionate singer (though opinions vary on my ability 🙂).

LUCA ANGELO MELIS

UNDER-SECRETARY GENERAL OF COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERNAL AFFAIRS

Hi, I’m Luca, a third year Aerospace Engineering student and will be the society’s Secretary for this year!

Geopolitics had been an interest of mine for a long time before joining BUMUN last year, as well as IR. I’m specifically interested in space policy, especially for its close links with defence policy but also for its historical potential to bring countries together.

MUN is a great opportunity for all students, as it has been for me, to improve their diplomatic skills (diplomacy is important even between people!), teamworking and becoming more comfortable with public speaking. Taking part in LIMUN earlier this year has additionally given me the chance of bridging my studies and my hobby as a member of COPUOS. Even if you do not study IR, I believe everyone should make the most out of the opportunities we offer, both for your personal and your professional growth.

I look forward to an exciting year as Secretary and for my Committee to continue the wonderful work our predecessors have started.

DANI ASCHENBRENNER

UNDER-SECRETARY GENERAL OF CHAIRING

My name is Daniel Aschenbrenner. I’m half Austrian 🇦🇹 half Spanish 🇪🇦 and I came to the UK to study Architecture.

This course might seem very unrelated to MUN. And it is. However, my friends always tell me that I should’ve become a politician. I agree, because I was very close to studying international relations. So, being part of BUMUN is me living my alter-ego life where I become a politician who knows how to smile in speeches (just like in my photo).

About my role: I will be your training officer. That means I’ll be there in every step of your learning journey. From the beginning (where I’ll tell you about my fun anecdotes as a delegate) to the end (where I’ll shape you up for MUN conferences, with what I learnt in books like “Art of War” by Sun Tzu)

TITUS HILLER

UNDER-SECRETARY GENERAL OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

As USG External Affairs, I hope that I can help the society to grow and develop, especially in creating the capacity and expertise for future committees to be ambitious and be able to achieve their goals.

In the more short term I would like to steer the society to cover lesser known topics with greater depth and frequency. So that the most fascinating and messed up issues of the forgotten places of the world (read: anything outside the “First world”).

The kind that are depressing in real life but great fun when in a MUN type setting. Most things are more fun when no one actually dies.

JACOB HO

UNDER-SECRETARY GENERAL OF FINANCE

Hello everyone, my name is Jacob Ho. I’m a 2nd year Economics student and I am delighted to have been elected as your treasurer this year.

MUN has provided me with a fantastic opportunity to better understand and appreciate the world we live in, and I hope to enable others to experience this same opportunity. Alongside this, MUN has enabled me to strengthen my analytical and public speaking skills.

As well as MUN, I’m an avid climber and a lover of food!

I’m truly excited and am looking forward to meeting you all in September!
